มากกว่าศิลปะคือ “เรื่องราว”

ภาพวาดไม่ได้มีไว้เพื่อสนองความต้องการด้านความสุนทรีย์ของผู้ชื่นชอบงานศิลปะ และหากโลกเราขาดไร้ซึ่งจิตรกรแล้ว คนรุ่นหลังก็อาจไม่ได้เห็นเรื่องราวหลายแง่มุมที่เกิดขึ้นในยุคสมัยที่การถ่ายภาพเพิ่งปรากฎขึ้นบนโลกและยังจำกัดอยู่ในวงแคบ

เช่นเดียวกับ The Travelling Companions ภาพเขียนสีน้ำมันโดย Augustus Leopold Egg (1816-1863) ที่วาดขึ้นในค.ศ. 1862 ที่สะท้อนให้คนรุ่นหลังเห็นถึงการเดินทางด้วยรถไฟในยุควิกตอเรียน ซึ่งทำให้เรารู้ว่าผู้คนในยุคนั้นมีรถไฟใช้กันแล้ว และเมื่อสืบค้นต่อไป ก็ทำให้เราได้ทราบว่าโลกเราเริ่มมีรถไฟแบบหัวรถจักรไอน้ำรับใช้ผู้โดยสารในเชิงพาณิชย์ในปี ค.ศ. 1830 (พ.ศ. 2373) โดยที่ก่อนหน้านั้นมีการใช้หัวรถจักรไอน้ำในการขนส่งถ่านหินมาก่อนสักระยะหนึ่งแล้ว

ภาพวาดจึงเป็นมากกว่างานศิลปะ แต่บ่งบอกเรื่องราวแห่งยุคสมัยได้อย่างละเมียดละไม ไร้ความรีบร้อน และเปิดประตูบานใหม่ให้ผู้ที่สนใจสืบค้นต่อเสมอ

Behind those strokes are “stories”

Paintings not only serve the pleasure of aesthetes, but imagine a world without painters, the following generations would have missed many social movements emerged in the era that photography was just invented and not extensively used.

One of decent examples includes ‘The Travelling Companions’, an oil painting by Augustus Leopold Egg (1816-1863) made in 1862. The picture depicts two sisters travelling in Victorian rail coaches. This means that passenger trains were available in Victorian era. And if we delve further into the history of commercial trains, we’ll learn that the first steam-powered passenger train operated in 1830, while steam-powered coal train was invented a litter earlier.

Painting is, hence, more than a mere piece of art. It tenderly tells stories of the era without haste, always opening a new door for those who want to explore.
